This year marks the 25th anniversary of Saul Steinberg's death. A major retrospective exhibition is being held in Madrid in his honor. Joost Swarte drew a portrait on the occasion.
Saul Steinberg
Saul Steinberg (1914 - 1999) was a Romanian-American cartoonist who is known for his covers and cartoons for The New Yorker. Steinberg is considered one of the most prominent artists of post-war art. His work cannot be classified in any way. As he himself said: "I don't really belong in the art, cartoon or magazine world, so the art world doesn't really know where to place me". He is what you call an 'artist's artist', because he is still a source of inspiration for many cartoonists.
Here an overview of his covers for The New Yorker from our vintage covers collection.
